Nicholas J. Talley, MD, PhD, is Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. He is also Professor of Medicine and Professor of Epidemiology at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, and has joint appointments in the Divisions of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and Epidemiology at Mayo Clinic Rochester, Minnesota, and Mayo Clinic Jacksonville. He received his doctoral degree from the University of Sydney, Australia, and his medical degree from the University of New South Wales, Australia.
Dr Talley’s research focuses on functional disorders, dyspepsia, gastroesophageal reflux disease, Helicobacter pylori, and eosinophilic disorders of the gut. He and his team have recently described a new disease entity, eosinophilic duodenitis, that is linked to functional dyspepsia. His group has also documented a genetic component in upper and lower functional bowel diseases. He has authored more than 500 original and review articles in peer-reviewed journals and is considered one of the leading authorities in clinical research on the stomach. He is currently principle investigator on a National Institutes of Health (NIH)–sponsored study evaluating the pathophysiology and pharmacogenomics of antidepressant therapy in functional dyspepsia.
